Living As A Cancer Survivor - Perspective

Mark Everett Kelly (with his dog Sammy) was diagnosed with Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma on December 12, 1990

Most of us struggle with our understanding of why things happen. I have wondered about this since my diagnosis at age 16.

Purchase “My Scars Tell A Story” here.

Everyone can struggle with "the grass is always greener" theory. We usually look at the lives of other people and say, "If only I had that" or "If only my life worked out that way."

I don't have an issue with others who admire certain people and aspire to greater heights in their own life. However, we only have this life. As much as we want to, wishing things would be another way will waste valuable time.

Cancer will make you understand perspective real fast. When I was sick, I valued my days more. I cherished my relationships more. When you don't know how much time you have, you want to make the most of it. I think of Holly Butcher's thoughts when she knew she was dying.

That's the thing about life; It is fragile, precious, and unpredictable, and each day is a gift, not a given right.

I'm 27 now. I don't want to go. I love my life. I am happy... I owe that to my loved ones. But the control is out of my hands.

My heart breaks for those who are so brave on the cancer support boards. I wish I could shelter everyone from the things cancer has taken. The cries, pleas, and pain others endure from this disease should make us all that much more grateful when we find ourselves in good health.

Perspective matters when looking at yourself and what you are dealing with in life. How much do we not see? How much do we take for granted that if we lost would cause us to regret?

Blogging about my thoughts concerning how to face the situation I find myself in has helped me define my perspective. I deal with some bad cards in my hand every day. However, it is up to me to do all I can to change that. I can't rewind time. I can only do my best and hold myself accountable. No one else is responsible for my failures.

As you go about your day, think about the things in life that you love. Tell someone important in your life how much you appreciate them. Take the time today to sit, think, and gain perspective.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
